As I was leaving Concord-Carlise High School (west of Boston, MA), I went to check out our new "computer lab". It was a wealthy town, well, the other side was :)
There were a bunch of test Apple's (this was 1982).
A nearby computer expert had come over as a favor to the computer sciences teacher, and to the kids.
As I walked in, he smiled, took off his tie and jacket and asked me to hang them up. He got on the dirty floor and started connecting wires, so I helped him.
After hours of dirty work, he got up, insisted on washing his hands before shaking mine, and said "By the way, I'm Ken Olsen, it was a pleasure. You kids come by the 'shop' anytime". (The 'shop' was DEC)
I was speechless. Slack jawed. He just smiled realizing I was shocked that this giant with a standing invitation to the Whitehouse, was the guy volunteering to do the grunt work.
I managed to tell him that my uncle had worked on Whirlwind with him, and he lit up. He repeated his invitation, not as a local celebrity being diplomatic, but as a guy with the power and willingness to help youths be their most.
A nearby computer expert had come over as a favor to the computer sciences teacher, and to the kids.
[... realizing] I was shocked that this giant with a standing invitation to the Whitehouse, was the guy volunteering to do the grunt work.
# 具体的には a bunch of test Apple's とか、help youths be their most とか local high school was plugged in とか

As I was leaving Concord-Carlise High School (west of Boston, MA), I
went to check out our new "computer lab". It was a wealthy town, well,
the other side was :)
There were a bunch of test Apple's (this was 1982).
A nearby computer expert had come over as a favor to the computer
sciences teacher, and to the kids.
As I walked in, he smiled, took off his tie and jacket and asked me to
hang them up. He got on the dirty floor and started connecting wires,
so I helped him.
I shut up and listened to him talk about what computing would mean to
us kids (I was almost 18 but fully understood what we meant).
After hours of dirty work, he got up, insisted on washing his hands
before shaking mine, and said "By the way, I'm Ken Olsen, it was a
pleasure. You kids come by the 'shop' anytime". (The 'shop' was DEC)
「Ken Olsen
I was speechless. Slack jawed. He just smiled realizing I was shocked
that this giant with a standing invitation to the Whitehouse, was the
guy volunteering to do the grunt work.
I managed to tell him that my uncle had worked on Whirlwind with him,
and he lit up. He repeated his invitation, not as a local celebrity
being diplomatic, but as a guy with the power and willingness to help
youths be their most.
I learned a life long lesson that day.
This titan went home with his shirt filthy, smiling ear to ear that a
local high school was plugged in.
I recently toured the Ken Olsen Science Center at Gordon College.
Again, he left an outstanding mark.
A nearby computer expert had come over as a favor to the computer sciences teacher, and to the kids.
[... realizing] I was shocked that this giant with a standing invitation to the Whitehouse, was the guy volunteering to do the grunt work.
