Dear BMJ reader,
I’m very sorry that we sent you multiple versions of our ‘Today on BMJ.com’ email yesterday. You have subscribed to this alert, but you certainly do not expect to receive more than one a day. So it must have been frustrating to find so many copies in your inbox and to have to spend time deleting them.
I’d like to assure you that your data was not compromised in any way. The problem was caused by the implementation of a new email scheduling system. We have robust systems in place to prevent readers being sent emails that they have not opted in to receive. But, as we discovered yesterday, we did not have a robust measure in place to prevent the same email being sent multiple times.
We are working hard to fix this. In the meantime, ‘Today on BMJ.com’ emails have been suspended until we can be absolutely sure that this won’t happen again.
I’m truly sorry that this happened. We try very hard to get the technology right in all our communications with everybody around the world who wants to hear what we’re doing. In this case, we made a mistake.

BMJ誌のアラートメール‘Today on BMJ.com’は、平日に１通来るのが通例だが、２０１８年３月２２日には６０通以上着信した。
なりすましか、それとも乗っ取られたのか。そう思われたが、新しいメール発信予約システムに切り替えたところ、複数の発信を防ぐ仕組みに不備があったとお詫びの手紙が来た。
