Windows7携帯、北米での初日販売数は4万台 では、タレコミのタイトルにWindows7携帯とあり、Windows7携帯ってなんだよ、話になっていた。
タレコミのなかでリンクされている Wired Vision の記事では "Windows7" が4回使わており、元の Wired の記事を見ると、1回だけ使われていた。
“The anemic sales number does not include the 89,000 Microsoft employees that will be given free Windows 7 phones,” Moritz quips.
Wired の元記事の方は、Moritz という人が実際に "Windows 7 phones" と記者に言っただけかもしれないので、必ずしも間違いではないが、Wired Vision の翻訳は誤訳と言っても過言ではないと思う。
しかし、そもそもこのような誤解を生じさせるのは、MS の名前付けに問題がある。
Windows Phone 7 に関する New York Times 向けのレビュー記事 (要アカウント) のなかで David Pogue は、Windows Phone 7 はぜんぜん "Windows" じゃないし、バージョンも限りなく "1.0" だし、名前がミスリードさせることを指摘していた。
The name “Windows Phone 7” is misleading twice. First, it’s not Windows. It doesn’t look or work like Windows, doesn’t run Windows software, doesn’t even require a Windows PC. (There’s an iTunes-like program for loading the phone with music and videos, but it’s available for both Mac and Windows.)
Second, this is not “7.” That number implies some relationship to Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft’s latest phone software attempt, which is corporate, cramped and complicated. No, Windows Phone 7 is most definitely a 1.0 release.
マーケティング的にも、認知度の高い "Windows" をつけざるを得ないのかもしれないが、せっかく新しい OS で再スタートしたのであれば、別の名前でチャレンジしてみるのも面白かったように思える。しかし、残念ながら僕にはいい名前を思いつけない...
