だいたい OED によるが、少し補足し、番号なども変更して、再構成。だけど、OEDの整理も変な気がして、あまり自信はない。2a の部分の説明がないと、繋りが不明だけど、これが書いてあるものが、あまりない。

• 2a.(< 1.) † 天文学の数表の独立変数 (それで表を引くと惑星の天球での位置などが明らかになるもの)

  In modern terms the tables have an independent variable (here called the argument[emphasis mine]), usually in the first colum (or the first two columns) and the entries in a subsequent column (or columns) are functions of that argument.
