テレビで見た松本氏のインタビューで、
「メーテルは元々『母』をイメージしていた」
「ヨーロッパ系言語で『メーテル』は『母』に連なることを後で知って驚いた」
と聞いたことがあります。

英語で mother マザー、ラテン語で mater マーテル。
それらの祖である印欧祖語で *mater- [bartleby.com] マーテル。
英語で関連する単語は material matrix matter など。
