12) For the prosperity of Ruby by Anonymous Coward
Do you have any idea what encourages more people to use Ruby?
matz:
You and other many people may well regard the prosperity of Ruby as good. They kindly advise me such as "Ruby has to enhance it for Windows" or "it needs the counterpart of cpan.pm." But, since Ruby is one of the opensource softwares, it does not benefit me even if programmers all around the world (yes, they actually) use Ruby. At least in an economic sense, that will have no merit for me.
I know many of you use, learn, or know Ruby. But does anyone pay me the reward for my creating Ruby? Surely, people buying my book pay me the royalty on the book. But it is the reward not for designing Ruby but for writing the book. Anyone can write one, they actually do it.
Creating Ruby is just for fun. I sincerely grateful that you think like "Ruby is good, and should widespread." I will be pleased with Ruby's prosperity and willing to receive an offer for it. However, please do not make me do with thing not for fun. Opensource softwares need no marketing. I am blessed with much more Ruby users than I expected for. I am also pleased enough with the widespread use as a side effect of that I designed good language.
Collaborators have much trouble to maintain Ruby for Windows. The more people would contribute information or labor, the better Ruby would become. Ruby never becomes better unless anyone contributes. One of the reasons for the success of Ruby is that I know what is essential for the Ruby language. I do not have so much knowledge on Windows that I can properly judge what is good or not. To make Ruby enhance for Windows, we call for those who can properly judge what is "good" for Ruby or what Ruby needs for Windows.
