惑星になれず、もちろんがっかりした。しかし、冥王星がもし今日見つかったとしたら、絶対に惑星だとはみなされない。最初は受け入れられにくいが、決定は科学的にも文化的にも正しい。天文学にとって偉大な前進だ
が一番冷静だと感じるな。

しかし、結局どちらも天文学の最大のスポンサーは政府ですが、
壮大なビッグプロジェクトのように見える我らが「はやぶさ」
は約１２０億円。
かたや米国の中規模クラスの惑星探査ミッションである
「ニューホライズン」は約８００億円。惑星探査に掛ける
予算規模を見ると改めて彼我の力の差を思い知らされます。
直接人間の生活には関わらない基礎自然科学に多額の費用を
掛ける米国の懐の奥深さが感じられますが、やはり光ある所に
には陰があります。
先日、宇宙科学研究本部の一般公開で「はるか」「VSOP-2」
計画に関わり、説明に立っていたISASの先生曰く、
「米国は多額の予算が投入されるのが魅力だけど、時の政権の
方針次第でいったん立案されて通った計画がいとも容易くぶち
壊しにされてしまう怖さが常にある。例えばブッシュが月・火
星探査計画をブチ上げたおかげで、地道に計画していた中・小
のミッションが軒並み潰された」との事。
「予算は少ないが、一度通ってしまえばいきなり覆される事
ない、安定継続性のある予算も大事で、一度ミッションで結束
したメンバーが崩れる事無く研究に打ち込める」との事。
パトロンのなり手は色々いるようですが、集票支持狙いの売名
など短期利益を目論む政治家というパトロンが付くと、横暴な
振る舞いで周囲が迷惑するようです。
